Career / Stress and Burn-out / Personal Coaching

Career coaching

  • You wonder: how do I make a good choice towards the next step in my career?
  • You feel like you are stuck and not using your full potential.
  • You want to make a career switch.
  • You want to experience more balance and peace.

Personal coaching

  • You are looking for an independent sounding board.
  • You want to make more impact by communicating better and making real connections with others.
  • You want to learn how to strengthen and deepen your leadership over yourself and others.
  • You want to manage stress better. Maybe you fret a lot or sleep badly. Or you feel responsible for everything.
  • You are on the brink of burnout.
  • You sometimes feel insecure and want to become more visible and raise your profile.
  • You suffer from a critical voice, you want to be more confident and be able to enjoy your successes more.

This is how I work

As a personal coach, I combine practical experience, intuition and science-based psychological knowledge. I will encourage and motivate you, but also challenge you. This process takes place in a confidential atmosphere and in a respectful manner, with plenty of room for learning. My coaching is eclectic, meaning that I use different methods and techniques appropriate to you as a person and your question. Together, we look at what you need to take the next step. In career coaching, I use both creative methods and scientifically validated questionnaires to give you a clear picture of 'who you are, what you can do and what you want'. In personal coaching and stress coaching, I like to use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy / Training (ACT), a method to discover what you really find important in your life and make that the basis of your actions. This enables you to be more flexible in life, enjoy life more and make better use of your qualities.

In the introductory meeting, we see if there is a 'click' and discuss your question. Every personal situation is different and therefore no coaching process is the same. Together, we formulate concrete, realistic coaching goals. Depending on your preference, coaching can take place either on location or online.

Who am I?

I grew up in beautiful Amsterdam, in a family where commitment and growth were very important. I learned then that it is not only about the final result, but also about the effort you put into it, and things had to be done well, never just 'halfway'. Music always played an important role and brought us together. Yet as a family, we also had considerable 'challenges'. It was sometimes difficult and because of this, I had to learn to be independent at a young age. I tried harder so that my parents didn't have any extra worries about me. This later made me develop an automatism to solve things myself and not ask for help from others, which cost me a lot of energy and 'toil'.

In adolescence, I learned how important thoughts are to how we feel, that you can choose your thoughts and that thoughts are not facts. This insight helped me stay positive, and inspired me to help others deal with stress. Even in primary school, I enjoyed 'coaching' by helping others. This coaching passion has only grown over the years. People often give me back that I radiate calm, that I am a good listener, but also dare to confront. In my coaching, I am clarifying, reflective and committed, and I am genuinely interested in the person sitting across from me.

Work experience

After completing my secondary school, there was high unemployment and recession. Because of the high probability of unemployment, I was advised against studying psychology, and I then opted to study economics, with which the chances of employment were much higher, and then a profession in financial administration. After working for a long time in the business world in small and large organisations, also as an executive and part of the management team, I followed my heart and successfully studied psychology at the University of Amsterdam in 2008. My dream of coaching became reality when I made the career switch to coach/psychologist. Since then, I have enjoyed coaching more than a hundred people in career, talent and development processes, with reintegration into the labour process, stress and burn-out and with increasing personal effectiveness.

This is how I work

My background as a psychologist, stress and career coach allows me to switch gears easily and draw on a wide range of experience. Where desired, I combine stress management with themes such as imbalance between giving and taking, perfectionism, fear of failure and/or (high) sensitivity, and career and meaning questions.
During my coaching processes, I always work from your question with concrete assignments, active work forms, short attention exercises and insightful constellations. And from a holistic approach: your willingness, thinking and feeling are all addressed. Based on your question and my work and life experience, we choose the approach that suits you and your question. I often hear back that I can read between the lines, can slow down where necessary and therefore know how to touch. And I do this with an equal & inviting attitude. I look through appreciative glasses and easily see possibilities, qualities (your best possible self) and challenge you to let go of your limiting beliefs and take steps. And then it takes courage, gentleness and commitment to take steps ('little steps' are also good) and persevere. In case of chronic stress, we first work on learning to relax again. A stress measurement with advice helps you understand this and gives you something to hold on to.

Who am I?

For the first 10 years of my life, I studied the world mostly closely. I was often labelled as shy, with today's knowledge I would call it sensitive. Only then did I decide to participate in it with full conviction. And I think few would have thought then that I would later stand in front of groups for fun. That didn't happen automatically by the way, I had to get out my comfort zone a great deal for that.
Because I naturally had 'good' conversations with friends, and because I suddenly found myself mediating between a friend and her mother who were quarrelling, for example, I discovered that counselling people suited me well and decided to study psychology.
Then, in my first real full-time job after graduating as an A&O psychologist, I quickly experienced chronic stress. After a little more then six months, I was sitting at home, unable to work any more. That was tough, I was mainly disappointed in myself. Now I look back on it as a blessing in disquise. Since then, I have been forced to see my health and enjoyment of work as goals (besides being there for others and performing), and that works.
And I also couldn't escape having to really deal with myself for a change, including mourning the abrupt loss of my father when I was 18.
This is how I discovered that daring to feel makes me a nicer person and a better psychologist, that coaching gives me great satisfaction and suits me well, provided I take good care of myself. I can use my analytical view, empathy, creativity, life experience and eagerness to learn (I never stop learning about this profession). And that I love my freedom immensely, which makes entrepreneurship suit me.
I have been living in Amsterdam IJburg by the water since 8 years with my boyfriend, daughter, son and dog.

Work experience

In 2010, I started working as an independent coach. Before that, I worked for more than 10 years for various companies (including Hogere Hotelschool, Belastingdienst and NOA (psychological consultancy firm) in various roles (Change Advisor, Training Coordinator, Trainer, Coach, Developer, Account Manager and Sector Manager). This has taught me a lot about the processes at play within organisations, and the match between individual and company. From these experiences, I can easily empathise with your experience.
As a coach and trainer, I have worked extensively for government (Gemeente Amsterdam, stadsdeel Noord, Havenbedrijf, GVB), education (HU, Hogeschool Kunsten, HvA, HBR, De Haagse Hogeschool), media (VPRO, publishers) and healthcare (OLVG, AVL, GGZ, ARQ) and entrepreneurs/startups.
Besides individual coaching, I guide teams in development towards a growth culture, supervise peer review, and provide training in stress management, coaching and personal effectiveness.

This is how I work

In the first session, we get to know each other a little better and start off. Through a combination of sparring, work assignments, theory, practice and reflection, you get a little further towards your desired outcome each session. We explore what you do, think and feel and why. You often come across obstacles, old habits and unhelpful thoughts. With the coaching, you learn to recognise, accept and, where necessary, adjust or break through them. If possible, with mildness, self-reflection and humour. Of course, we also look at what is already going well, which qualities you can use more and who or what can help you. I will support, inspire and challenge you, but also I count on your motivation to work with your question and to make the best co-production possible. I also find it important to consider 'the bigger picture' and have an eye for your wishes and goals in all areas of life. (NB If it is beyond my expertise, I will look for suitable alternatives with you). You can then start making choices that fit with what matters most to you now in your work and in your life.

In the coach sessions, I use many different insights, models and practices, which I have collected and tried over the years. If other topics or events require attention during the coaching, there is room for this. For instance, you can't work on your career properly if you are immensely stressed out, so sometimes we need to work on another topic first or in parallel. Maybe you like to have our conversation while walking in nature, that is often quite possible. We can also discuss or just prepare a practical situation from your work. If you feel up to it, we can also work with the help of a horse as a mirror, to learn by doing in a completely different way and strengthen your personal leadership.

I have learned and also experienced myself that it is important not just to talk and think about what you think and want differently. It is important to be or get in touch with what you feel and notice your body's signals. 'The head screams, but the body whispers...' is a beautiful expression in my opinion. Even if you have nothing to do with feelings, spirituality and related work forms, we often find a way to bring this in in a way that suits you. You can always bring your wishes and preferences into the coaching and indicate what works for you. And you can trust us to work together to find the most appropriate and effective way for you to achieve your goals - and continue on your path with more insight, skills and confidence.

Who am I?

My name is Sandra (1969) and I am of half Frisian, half 'Achterhoekse' descent and grew up in the south of Holland (Brabant). I really enjoyed my study (Psychology) in Nijmegen and subsequently lived and worked in various cities and provinces. Now I live in a cosy little neighbourhood in Amsterdam, fortunately my two grown-up daughters live nearby. I am very happy with my work as an independent coach/psychologist and with my great colleagues and the connection with LemonGrass Coaching.

If you ask those around me about my person, they will probably answer that I am always full of ideas, good at analysing and coming up with solutions, as well as being kind, sensitive and honest. I strive to find the best balance between getting a lot done and also enjoying the moment and relaxing in time. Unfortunately, I have been seriously ill in the past, which helps me to keep focused on what life is all about: taking good care of yourself, making conscious choices and devoting time and energy to the people and goals that are close to your heart.

Both in my private life and in my work, you get my full attention if you want to learn to take better care of yourself and find and follow your own path in life. Because I try to 'practice what I preach', I also try to be aware of what I need myself. As a coach, I want to be present with full attention and energy and I adjust my choices accordingly. Also I take care of myself as best I can by finding peace in nature, connecting with colleagues and allowing myself to be inspired and keep learning. I enjoy practising yoga, breathwork and mindfulness and I am interested in everything contributing to good selfcare. Finally I learn a lot from life, sometimes through trial and error, like we all do.

You can share with me whatever you think and feel and what you are afraid of. I will not judge you and will handle your trust with integrity. Feel welcome to explore your question and experience if I am the right coach for you.

If it is useful, I like to use (basic) exercises from yoga, mindfulness or breathwork and I am always open to learning new techniques that are helpful.

Work experience

After studying occupational and organisational psychology in Nijmegen, I really wanted to 'go into practice'. I started (in '93) in the prison in Vught in the personnel field and gradually built up a broad working experience. I have held various HR positions and worked in both large and small organisations, profit and non-profit, as an advisor and as an HR manager. This has given me a broad perspective and a good insight into what is (less) effective in organisations and how things can be done differently.

When I started working, I soon discovered that I loved talking to people 1-on-1 about their work and what they were up against. As early as my second year of work, I took an intensive career training course and that became one of my specialisations. In all my roles, I found it important to help people work more enjoyably. Sometimes it was about increasing influence, or reducing stress, better cooperation or restoring balance and health. Because I was keen to invest more of my time in this, and was looking for more peace and depth in conversations, I made the switch in 2010 to work fully as a coach/career advisor and consultant. First I worked for an agency (Laagland Loopbaanontwikkeling) and since 2013 I have been self-employed.

I have now coached many different people for various organisations. No coaching process is the same with me, because every person has a different manual, preferences and needs. I can draw from a whole range of theories, experience and exercises and believe it is important that together we find what works for you and takes you forward.

Some clients about me

"What you pay attention to grows"

Specialisations

Career Coaching, Life Coaching, ACT (Acceptance Commitment Therapy), with attention to physical awareness and mindfulness.

For whom?

Professionals. Anyone who wants to work with life and work questions and focus on his/her professional and personal development. I coach a wide range of professionals working in very diverse professions and industries, ranging from people working in law and finance to education and creative professions.

What can you come to me for?

Career coaching

Are you at a crossroads in your career? Are you lacking motivation at work and looking to reconnect with what truly excites you professionally? Do you want to discover your talents and core values and learn which roles align best with them?

Personal/life coaching

Do you feel the need to do everything perfectly, causing your enjoyment to fade? Are you struggling with a critical inner voice? Do you want to live with more self-awareness, lightness and self-compassion?
Then you have come to the right place with me! Together, we make sure you blossom and get the best out of yourself.

This is how I work

My approach can be characterised as committed, respectful and curious. I combine my feeling for people with my knowledge of psychology and the job market. My starting point is that you yourself hold the key to your happiness and success. I help you gain insight and access your feelings.
I believe in the power of setting goals while also recognizing the importance of creating space for rest and reflection. I use a wide range of 'tools' in addition to my intuition and experience. For career development programs, I use the Savickas method, which involves exploring the narrative of your life. By reflecting on your past, we can uncover direction for your future. Additionally, I work with the principles of ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) and mindfulness. ACT is essentially a way of living that teaches you to accept what cannot be changed, allowing space for painful feelings and situations. At the same time, it encourages you to push boundaries and achieve what you once thought was impossible. I’m here to support you on that journey!

Who am I?

I was born in 1977 in the beautiful region of Twente as the middle child of three. I grew up in a warm and nurturing family where values such as honesty, authenticity, openness, and care for others were highly cherished. Hard work and a good sense of humor were equally important in our household.
I am grateful to look back on a happy childhood that provided me with a solid and loving foundation for life. At the same time, like everyone, I also carry less pleasant experiences that have shaped who I am today. In various situations, I felt that I wasn’t good enough and needed to prove myself to others, which drained a lot of my energy.
Over the years, I have come to view those experiences from a different perspective, and they have significantly contributed to my passion for coaching. I am deeply motivated to truly see people for all they have to offer as individuals and to help them unlock their full potential
In my free time, I enjoy cooking, photography, running, traveling, and exploring new spots in the city with my husband and three children. I also value spending quality time with family and friends.

Work experience

In 2001, I successfully completed my studies in Work and Organizational Psychology at VU University. The years that followed were a journey of discovery as I explored which direction I wanted to take in my career. I broadened my perspective by traveling, worked in recruitment, and trained as an assessment psychologist, where I learned to observe people’s behavior and map out their strengths and areas for development. In 2006, I decided to pursue a professional coaching qualification at the Alba Academy because I wanted to play an active role in people’s development. Since then, a coaching approach has been central to my work. Over the past 12 years, I have gained experience in career guidance, coaching, and assessments (including at AVOP, Funktiemediair, and Derks & Derks) as a registered NIP psychologist in the business services sector, working with individuals. In October 2011, I made the decision to start my own business. It was an exciting yet challenging and stimulating step that provided me with more autonomy and a better work-life balance. I also chose to dedicate time to further professional development as a coach by completing various training courses and participating in regular peer groups. By connecting with Sandra, Wendy, and Rebecca and starting LemonGrass Coaching together, I now enjoy the collaboration I had been missing as an independent professional. We learn and grow together. My ambition is to eventually offer training in ACT and mindfulness, as I am passionate about helping people lead more conscious, lighter, and often more enjoyable lives.

By mapping patterns and beliefs, you gain insight into what is holding you back from taking the next step.
"I help you reconnect with your emotions, allowing you to regain your strength. You will begin to see new possibilities, and I encourage you to take action on them. This creates space for transformation."

"Are you struggling with chronic stress symptoms or recovering from burnout at home? Together, we will explore the root causes.
I help you get a grip by recognizing the physical and mental signals your body is giving you. By learning to identify your stress patterns and mapping out your triggers, you will better manage your energy balance. You will rediscover the joy in your work."
"Chronic stress can stem from underlying trauma or attachment issues. What causes you to repeatedly shift into survival mode? What thought patterns underlie this, and what are your triggers?"
To reach insights, we use the knowledge stored in your body. Self-acceptance and self-compassion create space to look at yourself with kindness and to acknowledge that what you have experienced is part of who you are today. You regain control of your own life and reclaim your strength."

Who am I?

I was born (1974) on the Nieuwmarkt, in the heart of Amsterdam. I spent the first twelve years of my life in various squats. My parents, originally from Belgium, fled the strict Catholic environment in which they were raised and became part of the squatter movement. As an only child, this meant that during my early years, I moved house five times and changed schools twice.

Through my history, I have personally experienced how important it is to have a safe and solid foundation from which to develop further. If this is lacking, due to attachment problems or unpleasant experiences, it is important that you can pay attention to recovering and healing this later in life.

I, too, spent a long time in survival mode, even after gaining more stability. Working hard, doing my best, juggling a demanding job with starting a family. I pushed through purely on willpower, even though my body was no longer able to keep up. This eventually led to a burnout a few years ago. I personally experienced what it’s like to hit your limits. Helping people rediscover themselves after a period of burnout or a significant event and find joy in their work again is what I guide others through."
