How to stay relevant in a rapidly changing labour market; why change capability is more important than ever.
"In a world where change is the only constant, the ability to learn and adapt is the key to success."
- Yuval Noah Harari
Work is changing. Professions disappear or shift, jobs are filled differently. Whereas years ago you were fairly 'safe' with a degree or specialisation, the world of work now demands something different. Something more fundamental: developing your 21st-century skills. These skills cover a wide range of competences including communication, creativity, critical thinking and collaboration. Changeability is also very important. In other words, the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.
What will change?
The rise of AI and automation is rapidly changing what work looks like. While we all don't know what the future of work will look like, the changes are happening fast. Alexander Klöpping talks about how AI is growing exponentially and that AI is expected to be smarter than humans in 2 years! Where AI was previously at the level of a smart primary school pupil, it has now already reached the level of a PhD student and is thus becoming increasingly supportive and relevant. All the changes mean that you will no longer find your security in your job, but you will have to find your footing in yourself and in your ability to reinvent yourself.
Change capability as key
Being able to change does not mean constantly having to run or being able to do everything. It is about being able to move along without losing yourself. It is about knowing where your strengths lie, what drives you and where you want to go. It requires self-insight, courage and regular reflection: Is what I am doing still correct?
How do you develop that?
- Dwell on yourself, develop self-knowledge. In order to change, self-knowledge is necessary. What are your values, talents, desires?
- Leave your safe zone from time to time. This can be small: a conversation, a training course, a new perspective. You can also take on a new task/project for a change.
- Allow yourself space to reflect. For example, with a coach who helps you explore and feel what you may already know but could not yet name.
